Good morning!
Today, we are here to hold the solemn opening ceremony for the 2020 freshmen. Firstly, I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations sincerely to all of you. After years of hard work and strict selection at different levels, you become a member of Shanxi Medical University, which has a century-old history and rich cultural heritage. Welcome 3279 undergraduate students ,2100 postgraduate students and 134 doctoral students from 30 provinces and autonomous regions, as well as 5 doctoral students and 21 master students from different countries. In the best years of your life, you come to Shanxi Medical University with lofty ideals, entrustments of families and national expectations to start a new chapter of your life. Here, on behalf of all the teachers, students and medical staff of our school, I would like to thank you for your trust in SXMU and my heartfelt gratitude to your teachers and parents.
Since the establishment of SXMU 101 years ago, it has been determined to move forward despite of hardships and has trained batches of outstanding doctors and new generations. Not only did the long-lasting exploration of generations of SXMU promoted the formation of the school motto——Broad and Profound in Medicine, High and Sound in Virtueand the school spirit——Practicality and Diligence, Persistence and Tenacity，but also it made remitting efforts and important contributions to protect the physical and mental health of more than 37 million people.
University is full of the knowledge and advanced thought. It provides the platform for people with dreams to explore the truth as much as possible, and also offers unlimited opportunities for people with different specialties to learn from each other. During your time in college, you will shape your values, develop your personality and character, learn to distinguish between right and wrong, set grand goals, and firm your ideas and beliefs. Today, I would like to share with you around the theme of “Establishing the grand plan of life, being a promising youth in the new era”.
1.Establish lofty ambitions and be the ambitious youth in the new era
As younger generation, you are determined to be promising young people in the new era. From today on, you should cherish the aspiration to serve the country andset up lofty ideals. You should also attach your ambition with the future of the motherland and the destiny of the nation, stay close to the grassroots and contribute to the country.
The world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century. The internal conditions and external environment of China are undergoing complex changes. You are the future of our country and the hope of our nation. In such an important period of historical time, only by combining life aspirations with the development of the motherland, you can make achievements that live up to the times. All of you are outstanding among your peers, through hard work and striving, you are now stepping into SXMU to pursue your dream. Looking forward to the future, aiming to be pillars of the nation and leaders of medicine, you ought to set up a far and fight ambition. Only by firming up the ideal of serving the country and the people, and pursuing dreamstirelessly, you can outline the infinite possibilities of life.
In the pursuit of your dreams, I hope that everyone will take the initiative to enhance our “four self-confidence” and patriotism, uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In the process of achieving dreams, I hope all of you will carry forward the patriotic sentiments of people in SXMU, consciously combine the pursuit of your own dream with national development and the process of the national rejuvenation, andlive up to your youth in the vivid practice of realizing the Chinese dream.
2.Concern the whole countryand be the virtuous youth in the new era
2020 is a special year. COVID-19 sweeping the world has affected the world pattern and the course of history. The sudden outbreak of this epidemic has not only disrupted the rhythm of people’s study and life, but also made us withstand the test of the epidemic together with people across the country and the world. Especially, people of SXMU demonstrated their patriotic spirit with passionate practical actions.
A total of 424 medical staff from 10 affiliated hospitals of our school rushed to Hubei without fear and flinching. Thousands of medical staff stayed at fever clinic, and medical experts in basic medicine, public health and other disciplines made scientific researches. In the meantime, more and more students of SXMU volunteered to provide volunteering service in their hometowns, which vividly demonstrated the doctors’ oath——“eliminating people’s diseases, helping perfect health” and promote the formation of the great spirit of fighting with epidemic with people all over the country——“life is priority, the hole nation stands together, respect science and share the same destiny”. In this big examination of the epidemic, seven staff of our school were awarded the “National Advanced Individual in Fighting COVID-19”, two staff were awarded the “National Excellent Communist Party Member”, four staff were awarded the honorary title of “Women Pace-setter in Fighting Against the COVID-19” and the COVID-19 Emergency Ward of the Affiliated Pulmonary Hospital was awarded the honorary title of “Women Pace-setter Collectives in Fighting Against the COVID-19”.
Every student here today, with a high degree of self-discipline and a strong will, you have got through the “extended version” of the third year in senior high school and “the most difficult test preparation season in history”. In your own small battlefields, you have also delivered your outstanding result s without regret. I hope all of you will step into the palace of medicine with infinite feelings, brave hearts and triumphalism, and interpret the true essence of medicine of healing the wounded and saving the dying with your own practical actions.
3.Pursue truth and innovation,and be the youth who dare to explore in the new era
Rich and colorful college time is the most wonderful time in one’s life and the key period for you to pursue and realize your dreams. During this key period, I hope that you can follow the footsteps of you predecessors with passion of striving, courage of setting up far ambition and sentiments of considering the world from today and take your first step of exploring your future bravely. From this moment, trying boldly, doing well in thinking and taking actions, you should not only design your dreams, but also make your dreams come true. Take every steptoachieve your goal and create an infinitely possible future on the road of exploring the truth and making effort to innovate. I hope that years from now, when you graduate and your friends and family ask about your performance in university, you will say proudly, “I didn’t waste that wonderful time”.
The undergraduate period is an important stage to lay a solid foundation of knowledge. You should be good at managing and making good use of time, with an open vision, critical thinking, and the use of abundant learning and research resources to promote your own continuous growth.
The postgraduate stage is a critical period for the development of researchers who are determined to devote themselves to academics. For graduate students, you need to continue to learn more knowledge and further improve your own level. More importantly, you need tohave a long-term vision, explore in depth, be innovative, and strive to be a builder of new disciplines and knowledge, a transmitter of new culture and ideas, and a contributor to new industries and forms of business.
In the best time of your life, with your beautiful dreams, we meet in SXMU. From today, you have become a member of SXMU, and you should carry forward and shoulder the responsibility of the country and the nation. I hope that in your study and life in the next few years, you will become the promising youth in the new era who set sights highly, cherish time, care the world, be realistic, innovative and ambitious, and write a brilliant chapter of your generation in SXMU.
