On the morning of February 27th, 2024, the 2024 Conference on High-Quality Development of Disciplines and Science & Technology at our university was held in the Academic Lecture Hall of the Teaching and Office Building at the Zhongdu Campus. The theme of the conference was "Focusing on New Breakthroughs, Striving to Create World-Class Disciplines and Science & Technology, and Striving for the Comprehensive Construction of a National First-Class Research-Oriented Medical University." Li Jinbi, a member of the Education Working Committee of the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Education, attended the meeting, and Wang Jun, the Secretary of the University Party Committee, and Jie Jun, the President of the University, along with other members of the university's leadership team, were present at the meeting. The conference was chaired by Vice President Zhang Yanbo.
The heads of various functional departments and academic support units, the party and government leaders of various schools and affiliated hospitals, deputy directors responsible for disciplinary and scientific work, management personnel, heads of disciplinary degree programs, heads of provincial-level scientific research platforms, and other internal scientific research institutions, as well as newly enrolled doctoral students and representatives of teachers and students from the past two years, totaling more than 400 people, attended the meeting.
Li Jinbi, on behalf of the Provincial Department of Education, congratulated the convening of this conference. He pointed out that Shanxi Medical University is a key supported university under the "Hundred Billion Project" for higher education in the province, which is an affirmation of the university's achievements by the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government and an expectation for the university's future. The university should focus on the construction of new medical disciplines, use innovative medical thinking to lead the construction of disciplinary specialties, promote the iterative upgrading of traditional medical disciplines, and actively create a new system of medical disciplines. Efforts should be made in organized scientific research, with a focus on the construction of scientific and technological platforms, the establishment of scientific and technological innovation teams in the university, undertaking or applying for major scientific research projects, and gathering strength for original and leading scientific and technological breakthroughs to enhance independent innovation capabilities. Practical measures should be taken in the introduction and cultivation of high-end talents, making talent work a top priority for the university, establishing disciplinary and scientific research special zones, implementing the autonomy of personnel decisions at the department level, establishing and improving talent evaluation mechanisms, and creating a first-class environment for the development of talents. He hoped that the university would consciously undertake the mission and responsibility of building a healthy China and a healthy Shanxi, give full play to its own advantages, promote high-quality discipline construction and high-level scientific and technological innovation, and enter the ranks of "Double First-Class" universities as soon as possible.
Wang Jun, the Secretary of the University Party Committee, delivered an important speech at the meeting. He pointed out that this conference is an important meeting held at a critical time for the deepening of the "Hundred Billion Project" for higher education in our province and the creation of "Double First-Class" at our university. It is a crucial meeting related to the qualitative leap in disciplinary construction and scientific innovation. He stressed the need to unwaveringly implement the university's determined strategy of "2+1+1" for disciplinary construction and achieve new breakthroughs in building first-class disciplines. Efforts should be focused on creating a "community of disciplinary construction" with first-class disciplines as the core, promoting the overall improvement of the university's disciplinary level. He demanded the effective implementation of strategic arrangements for organized scientific research. There should be continuous innovation in the project-based management mechanism for talent introduction, and diverse measures should be taken to introduce and cultivate various talents and teams, creating a high-level talent echelon with competitive strength and innovative vitality. Further efforts should be made to consolidate the university's basic platforms, optimize and restructure provincial-level platforms, and build an important supporting force with strong local roots. Greater emphasis should be placed on the construction of ministerial-level platforms, and cooperation with top domestic universities and pharmaceutical companies should be established or participated in the construction of national key laboratories to create a strategic scientific and technological force of the highest caliber. He emphasized the need to work with a sense of mission, responsibility, and urgency to continuously push the university's high-quality development to new heights.
President Jie Jun presented a report on the discipline and science & technology work entitled "Focusing on New Breakthroughs, Striving to Create World-Class Disciplines and Science & Technology, and Striving for the Comprehensive Construction of a National First-Class Research-Oriented Medical University." The report comprehensively summarized the main achievements of the university's disciplinary construction and scientific & technological work in recent years, scientifically assessed the current opportunities and challenges faced, and made deployments for the main tasks of disciplinary construction and scientific & technological work in the next five years. He pointed out that to achieve the university's goals for disciplinary construction and scientific development in the next five years, it is necessary to categorize and raise the overall level of disciplinary construction, break down barriers and intensify cross-disciplinary construction, align with demands and construct high-quality disciplinary clusters, drive innovation to enhance the level of scientific and technological research, and leverage strengths to improve the university's ability to serve society. He emphasized the need to adhere to the fundamental task of cultivating morality and talents, use the construction of "Double First-Class" as a guide, and strive to build a national first-class research-oriented medical university.
The conference held a plaque awarding and commendation ceremony to recognize and award disciplines, degree programs, platforms, teams, and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to disciplinary construction and scientific & technological work.
The conference invited Professor Lu Ming from Nanjing Medical University and Professor Meng Xiangli from Tsinghua University to deliver special reports entitled "The Road to Characteristic Construction of 'Double First-Class' in Local Universities—Taking Nanjing Medical University as an Example" and "The Practice of Tsinghua University's High-Level Scientific and Technological Self-Reliance for Promoting High-Quality Development."
